The Secret - May 2012 - Volume 4 Issue 2


Over the past couple of months, we’ve been looking at ways to make healthy choices and spring clean our bodies. This month, my focus is on the mind. There are 2 concepts that are important. The first is that absolutely everything is energy. Our bodies, our cells are energy, but so are our thoughts. Positive thoughts have positive energy; negative thoughts have negative energy. The energy of your thoughts is felt not just by you, but potentially by anyone anywhere, and certainly by those near you.

You may have heard of something called the law of attraction. It basically states that like attracts like, or that which is like unto itself is drawn. That is, positive thoughts and energy attract more positive thoughts and energy, whereas negative thoughts and energy attract more negative. . . . you get the idea.

One great source of information about the law of attraction is a book (also a movie) called The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne. (Note: this movie is not to be confused with another movie also called The Secret, starring David Duchovny!) This book is one that is listed on our web site as recommended reading, and the following is a review of The Secret.

What is The Secret? The Secret is the law of attraction. The book, The Secret, consists of quotes of numerous well-known proponents of the law of attraction, explaining how it works, and how it has been understood and written about for centuries although most people have not been aware of it. This is expanded upon by the author, Rhonda Byrne.

There are so many ‘key points’ in this book that it is impossible to do it justice without pretty much including the entire book, but I’ll try to keep this to a reasonable length!

The Secret is first explained, and then two chapters are devoted how to use it. This is followed by chapters on The Secret to money, to relationships, to health, to the world, to you, and to life. Bibliographies are provided for all the participants, both past and present – several well-known authors from the past are quoted, and they are included as well as those who were featured in the movie, The Secret.

   What is The Secret?

“The Secret gives you anything you want: happiness, health, and wealth.” Bob Proctor, Philosopher, author and personal coach.

“You can have, do, or be anything you want.” Dr. Joe Vitale, Metaphysician, marketing specialist, and author.

“The Secret is the Law of Attraction! Everything that’s coming into your life you are attracting into your life. And it’s attracted to you by virtue of the images you’re holding in your mind. It’s what you’re thinking. Whatever is going on in your mind, you are attracting to you.” Bob Proctor.

The book documents the history of the law of attraction – it’s the most basic and powerful law in the Universe, and is written about in many major religions, including Hinduism, Hermetic traditions, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians and Egyptians also wrote about it.

We need to understand that our thoughts are energy, they have a frequency. (This is all based on quantum physics, seriously.) As you think, your thoughts are sent out into the Universe, where they magnetically attract like things that are on the same frequency. If you think of a radio or TV, and think about selecting a station or channel, we know that when we tune into a specific frequency, we get a particular station or channel (even if we don’t know why), and it’s the same with our thoughts. If your thoughts are negative (i.e. you’re focusing on what you don’t want), and you don’t like what you’re attracting, you need to change your thoughts (frequency) to what you do want.

“The law of attraction doesn’t care whether you perceive something to be good or bad, or whether you don’t want it or whether you do want it. It’s responding to your thoughts. So if you’re looking at a mountain of debt, feeling terrible about it, that’s the signal you’re putting out into the Universe. ‘I feel really bad because of all this debt I’ve got.’ You’re just affirming it to yourself. You feel it on every level of your being. That’s what you’re going to get more of.” Bob Doyle, Author and law of attraction specialist.

However, don’t despair if you’re dealing with problems right now; it has been scientifically proven that negative thoughts have hundreds of times less power than positive thought. It takes many negative thoughts, persistent negative thinking and negative emotions to bring something negative into your life. Also, fortunately, there is a time delay between thinking thoughts and attracting something into your life, so you have time to change your thoughts if need be.

This means if you focus on what you want and make it your predominant thought, feeling as if you already have it, it will come into your life.

Note that the law of attraction does not hear the negative part of statements. (Pardon this negative statement!) Examples are provided:

You say, “I don’t want a bad haircut.” The law of attraction hears, “I want bad haircuts.” “I don’t want to be delayed.” means “I want delays.” – and so on.

“You want to become aware of your thoughts and choose your thoughts carefully and you want to have fun with this, because you are the masterpiece of your own life.” Dr. Joe Vitale. One strategy suggested for quieting the mind, to help you control your thoughts, is meditation. It can be done effectively for just a short period of time, so it is easy to add to a busy schedule. However, no information is provided about how to meditate.

Whether or not you’re aware of the law of attraction, it is in effect; it’s a law of nature. Like the law of gravity, it is impartial, impersonal and precise.

The bad news may be learning that our thoughts and feelings are responsible for our life; however, the good news is that if that has not served us well so far, we can change or undo whatever needs to be changed or improved upon by changing our thoughts and feelings. We do have control over them – we just have to believe that. We are responsible, but we are not to be blamed.

   How to Use The Secret

Aladdin and his lamp are mentioned to demonstrate the use of the Secret. Apparently in the original story, there was no limit of three wishes, the genie simply said any time he was called upon, “Your wish is my command.” Three simple steps are outlined:

  1. Ask.
  2. Believe.
  3. Receive.

As you ask, you become clear about what you want. Believing means acting, feeling and thinking as if you have already received what you’ve asked for. You do not have to know how what you want is going to materialize. Something as simple as creating your day in advance by thinking of the way you want it to go, helps you live your life intentionally.

Gratitude: An excellent first step is to focus on what you feel grateful for every day. This puts you in a more positive frame of mind and helps attract more positive things into your life.

Visualization: When you create pictures in your mind of what you want, you generate powerful thoughts and feelings of having it now, which activates the law of attraction.

   The Secret to Money

This chapter includes a number of really interesting stories of well-known people who, early in their careers, were making very little, and who applied the Secret to their situation, resulting in very major increases in income. It is also pointed out that other people supposedly apply the principles of the law of attraction without success. However, invariably, they are focusing on lack, not on abundance, and on actually having what they want before it materializes. For example, if you say you can’t afford something, that is exactly what you will attract, not enough money for what you want.

Giving is an important first step to getting money, yes, even before you have very much to give. If you think you don’t have enough to give, that will attract lack! Think wealth.

   The Secret to Relationships

I’m sure you’ve heard before that you have to treat yourself the way you want other people to treat you – this is an important part of the Secret as it applies to relationships. Stories are included of people seeking a relationship but unwittingly putting the law of attraction into action to keep the relationship from happening. To make a relationship work, focus on what you appreciate about the other person, not on your complaints – that way you will see more of the strengths.

   The Secret to Health

“Our body is really the product of our thoughts. We’re beginning to understand in medical science the degree to which the nature of thoughts and emotions actually determines the physical substance and structure and function of our bodies.” Dr. John Hagelin, Quantum physicist and public policy expert.

“We’ve known in the healing arts of a placebo effect. A placebo is something that supposedly has no impact and no effect on the body, like a sugar pill. You tell the patient that this is just as effective, and what happens is the placebo sometimes has the same effect, if not greater effect, than the medication . . . designed for that effect. They have found that the human mind is the biggest factor in the healing arts. . . .

Our physiology creates disease to give us feedback, to let us know we have an imbalanced perspective, or we’re not being loving and grateful. So the body’s signs are not something terrible.“ Dr. John Demartini, Philosopher, chiropractor, healer and personal transformation specialist.

“We’ve got a thousand different diagnoses and diseases out there. They’re just the weak link. They’re all the result of one thing: stress. If you put enough stress on the chain and you put enough stress on the system, then one of the links breaks.” Dr. Ben Johnson, Physician, author, and leader in energy healing.

It is affirmed that if someone has a disease, it can be turned around by the power of ‘right’ thought. An example is provided of the use of laughter to cure a diagnosis of breast cancer – this was based on Norman Cousins’ book, Laughter is the Best Medicine.

The body’s powerful healing system is explained, and also the importance of attitude – a positive attitude can positively affect the prognosis of disease, and a negative attitude can negatively affect the prognosis. Focusing on disease gives the disease power – focus on health and happy thoughts. Beliefs about aging are described as all in our minds; the advice is to focus on health and eternal youth. Ignore all society’s negative messages about aging.

   The Secret to the World

All the campaigns against various things only attract more attention to the negative aspect, e.g. anti-war focuses on war. “Mother Teresa was brilliant. She said, ‘I will never attend an anti-war rally. If you have a peace rally, invite me.’ She knew. She understood The Secret. Look what she manifested in the world.” Jack Canfield, Author, teacher, life coach, and motivational speaker.

You cannot help the world by focusing on the negative world events. If you feel you need to be informed, you can still avoid being inundated by them! Instead, focus on trust, love, abundance, education and peace. Life is abundant and there is more than enough to go around despite what you may hear in the news. You can tap into this abundance through your thoughts and feelings.

   The Secret to You

A summary of a few of the ideas from this chapter includes:

  • Everything is energy, and you are an energy magnet.
  • Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it just changes form.
  • An unlimited supply of ideas is available to each of us. Your power is in your thoughts, so be aware of them.
  • “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, either way you are right.” Henry Ford (1863-1947).
  • You are not your past; you can change.
   The Secret to Life

The Secret to life is “Joy, love, freedom, happiness, laughter.” Neale Donald Walsch, Author, international speaker, and spiritual messenger.

  • The only thing you need to do is feel good now.
  • Do what you love. If you don’t know what brings you joy, take the time to think about it and figure it out. It doesn’t necessarily mean big things, it includes small pleasures, like petting your dog or cat, or walking in nature.

The Secret conveys a very positive message. It has been criticized by people who have applied its principles without success. This is undoubtedly because they had some negative thoughts or feelings even if they were not aware of them. This leads to a weakness in the book; namely that our subconscious minds may have negative thoughts that we are not aware of, and to make the law of attraction ‘work’ we first need to deal with these.
